Complex Bowel Care

Course Overview

The Bowel Care course is tailored for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and support staff responsible for assisting individuals with bowel management needs.  This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to provide effective and compassionate bowel care.

Course Highlights:

• Understanding Bowel Care: Explore the concept of complex bowel care, its significance, and the essential functions of the bowel within the digestive system.  Participants will learn about the four R’s of bowel care and common bowel problems that may arise.
• Digestive System Overview: Gain a foundational understanding of the digestive system’s anatomy and function, emphasising how it relates to bowel care.  This will provide context for understanding bowel health and management.
• Classification of Stool: Learn about the various classifications of stool and how they relate to bowel health.  Participants will be introduced to bowel charts as a tool for tracking and assessing bowel function.
• Bowel Management Techniques: Understand the different bowel management strategies, including the use of aperients and suppositories.  Participants will gain practical skills for inserting suppositories and mini enemas, learning step-by-step procedures for effective administration.
• Bowel Management Plans: Discover how to create comprehensive bowel management plans tailored to individual client needs, including documentation requirements to ensure continuity of care.
• Practical Activity: Engage in a hands-on practice session where participants will apply their knowledge by practicing the insertion of Microlax enemas and suppositories using proper techniques and hygiene practices.
• Assessment and Evaluation: The course will conclude with an assessment to evaluate participants’ understanding of key concepts, followed by a review session to clarify any questions and reinforce learning outcomes.

By the end of this course, participants will be well-prepared to provide informed and effective bowel care, enhancing the quality of life for those they support.
