Course Overview

This specialised course is designed for caregivers, nursing staff, support workers, and healthcare professionals who work with individuals affected by epilepsy and require VNS therapy.  Led by our Head Clinical Nurse Trainer, this session equips participants with the essential knowledge needed to administer Vagal Nerve Stimulation safely and effectively during seizure episodes.

Course Highlights:

  • Understanding Epilepsy: Explore the fundamental aspects of epilepsy, including its causes, different types of seizures, and the associated health complications that individuals may experience.
  • Vagal Nerve Stimulation Overview: Learn what VNS is and how it is used as a treatment option for individuals with epilepsy, focusing on the mechanisms and benefits of this therapy.
  • Activating the VNS Device: Gain hands-on understanding of how to activate a VNS device, including the proper use of the magnet during seizures.
  • VNS Procedures and Side Effects: Understand the step-by-step procedures involved in VNS activation and learn to identify potential side effects that may arise from this treatment.
  • Emergency Protocols: Review important steps to take when VNS is insufficient, and an ambulance must be called.
  • Assessment and Review: Engage in knowledge assessments, review session key points, and take away practical tips to ensure successful application of VNS therapy.

The course features interactive presentations and discussions to provide participants with the knowledge and confidence needed to correctly apply VNS therapy during emergencies. Upon completion, attendees will be able to respond to seizures using VNS devices and improve the safety and quality of care for individuals with epilepsy.
