Course Overview

This specialised course is designed for caregivers, nursing staff, support workers, and healthcare professionals responsible for administering Schedule 8 (S8) medications, also known as controlled drugs.  Led by our Head Clinical Nurse Trainer, this session provides essential knowledge on handling S8 medications in compliance with legal and safety regulations.

Course Highlights:

  • Introduction to S8 Medications: Understand what Schedule 8 (S8) medications are, including how they differ from other medication schedules, their therapeutic uses, and the potential risks associated with misuse or abuse.
  • Medication Scheduling (SUSMP): Explore the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP) and the categorisation of medications into schedules, with a specific focus on what is controlled in each schedule.
  • S8 Storage and Protocols: Learn the strict storage requirements for S8 medications, including legal protocols for handling, documenting, and administering these substances. Emphasis is placed on calling for approval, maintaining the drug of addiction register, and handling medication profile charts.
  • Practical Application: Review practical scenarios involving S8 medication management, such as proper documentation, storage, and disposal protocols, ensuring participants are fully equipped to manage these medications responsibly.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations: Understand the legal requirements surrounding the administration of S8 medications and how to follow best practices to remain compliant with healthcare regulations.

This course includes interactive presentations, group discussions, and practical sessions to ensure participants can confidently manage the complexities of Schedule 8 medication handling in real-world settings.  Upon completion, participants will be able to safely store, administer, and document the use of S8 medications in compliance with legal standards.
