Course Overview
The Oral Health and Suctioning course is designed for caregivers, nursing staff, support workers, and healthcare professionals who assist clients with oral care. Lead by our Senior Clinical Nurse, this focused workshop equips participants with the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills required to perform oral suctioning safely, understanding both the benefits and potential complications associated with the procedure.
Course Highlights:
- Introduction to Oral Suctioning: Gain a foundational understanding of oral suctioning, including the anatomy of the oral cavity from both front and side views, and learn the purpose and benefits of the procedure.
- Suction Catheters: Become familiar with different types of suction catheters and when to use each type in a care setting.
- Procedure Essentials: Learn the complete oral suctioning process, including required equipment, proper oral hygiene protocols, and effective toothbrushing methods for client care.
- Safety and Equipment Maintenance: Understand the importance of cleaning and maintaining equipment to ensure client safety and optimal hygiene practices.
- Hands-on Practice and Assessment: Apply your learning in a practical assessment, with guided evaluation to reinforce safe, effective technique and procedure.
This interactive training combines presentations, demonstrations, and a practical assessment to reinforce key concepts. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with the skills and confidence to assist clients with oral suctioning, supporting safer and higher-quality care.
